I have always though that (and do) when you design a website, you use tables to create the layout. I use dreamweaver, and when i want to create a site i just you the insert table feature, and add the appropriate number of cells and columns.
I was on a web design forum and came across a post that said something about know one using tables anymore, and the latest sites are all xhtml (instead of html), and the layouts are designed using css. I had always thought css was just used for the colour, font, mouse over effect, etc on a hyperlink (this is what i have used it for in the past).
Is it still ok to design a site using tables? Do most of the top websites use tables or css?

Yes ! major site have all changed their site to scemantique html and css style. Use CSS for style and HTML for content instead of mixing both in a HTML file mean a lot. Your design will degreace gracefully in older browser. Your design will be easier to maintain and use a lot less bandwidth (and by the side more speed). Easier to optimize for search engine like google. When you change some style you don't even need to touch HTML you can change every color and image in CSS.
HTML was created to store the data (content) of the website only.
All the style, color, image which are a part of the design go to the CSS.
You can use HTML 4.01 or XHTML both are fine. XHTML are HTML over XML and offer very small advantage. Content served as application/xhtml+xml instead of text/html.

Yes!!
As browsers have increased their support for CSS, there has been a signficant shift away from table-based design. Tables were never designed for presentation, and only became the standard method of doing so because the CSS support of earlier browsers was pretty shoddy.
Some sites use tables essentially because it's the quickest way from point A to point B. Because Internet Explorer has several rendering bugs when it comes to CSS, it is a lot of extra work to write special style rules for Internet Explorer to render pages correctly. The work is worth it in the end (in my humble opinion) as you end up with a site which has a lot less markup and is MUCH easier to maintain. As well, often times table based sites are not easily accessible to visually impared people who access the internet using screen readers.

i've found a ton of default layouts i like, but when i go to put the code in my profile, the table doesn't show up.
like all i see is the background on the ENTIRE page.
put on all the profile previews the table shows up white, which is how i want it to be.
i know that there isn't a code in my profile that could be screwing thiis up, because i deleted every single other code in there so the only one there is the code for the layout.
and it can't be a "problem" with the layout because this is happening with all of the default layouts i'm trying, ad they're from differnet pages on myspace.

if you want a layout thats just like the one's in the url's you have there then go to the second url, highlight everything in that box under the picture of it (it looks like a bunch of symbols and random words) and then paste it in your "About Me" section when editing your profile. once you save it, it will become your layout

a layout is only for the background of your myspace page. You only use it once, unless you want to change it from time to time. When you find one, you copy and paste the code from the site that you found the layout. Then, you paste it in your 'edit profile' section, under about me. that should work for you, hope it helps.

Okay, so I have Adobe Elements Photoshop 6. I know how to make layouts and stuff, but they can only be so many mega pixels (I am making this skin to put on bebo). actual size screenshot means that the screenshot image is not resized. if you open it , it should be the same size with your screen. all you have to do is hit the print screen button, open paint, change the dimensions small (if it's too big, bigger than your screenshot itself)-smaller size doesn't affect the screenshot size when pasted, it will correct itself, then paste the screenshot, click file, select save as, then choose save as JPEG(*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF).
normally an actual size screenshot is 1024x768 or 800x600.

Most sites usually have an option of downloading a certain layout because it can also be used as a desktop background (the picture, not the layout itself). However, if it was just for myspace, there should always be a HTML code somewhere that she can copy/paste to add to her profile. Never allow her to download a "Myspace layout" because you don't have to...and to avoid any potential spy/adware and/or viruses that may come from that site.

Well, it takes a long time to explain, but I can try. First, you should make a 'preview profile' to be used to view your layouts. Put the layout on the 'preview profile', then view your profile, then press the PrtSc SysRq button on ur keyboard, which basically takes a picture of the page. Then, open paint, and press CTRL+v, then the picture will be opened on paint. After that, save the picture, then upload it on photobucket or whatever site you like to use, to get the picture URL. Then when you go into your blog, there should be a button of a picture, click that, and put the pic URL into the box that pops up, and your done!

If I were making layouts for people on MYSPACE, I would make them with that person in mind.
But if you just make them, and sell them, people are interested in Chinese Horoscopes, like this is the Year of the Pig, so that might be an interesting idea.
I would think of any hobbie, job, or craft out there, and make some with those things as the main idea.
Some about different colours of hair or eyes would be interesting too, like a layout for "Blondes" or "Brunettes" or "Blue-eyed" people.

I don't see any XXXX's. I've been using Createblog layouts for almost a year now and have never encountered a layout code that required me to change any XXXX's to my Friend ID. It's probably for another code. So I wouldn't worry about it. Just place the code in your "About Me" section and see what happens.

First of all, Xanga and Myspace are two different websites. Their layouts are still html/CSS but they are not exactly enterchangeable. Xanga layouts often refer to the Xanga website for example. The code is standard for the web, but you will probably find them not very compatible with one another.
Now below is a website full of Xanga layouts that you could try or experiment with. You will also notice that there is an affiliate link to myspace-monkey.com on the left hand side menu. There you can find more myspace things including content generators and such.

that site is kinda dumb to work with. The only preview I get is when I move the cursor over a layout. The actual preview button doesn't work for me, but I can get the code. You might need Java if there's nothing when you put your cursor over the layout page.

It's not going to be something you can be able to do in a flash. Most of the layouts from createblog.com are created by users who have extensive experience in that field and are using programs which are expensive as well as knowledge they have gained from taking classes.
However, if you're really willing to be able to make your own layouts, start out small -- read up on coding (HTML, CSS are the most common codes used in layout making for blogs). A common place to start learning HTML is http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.as... As for CSS, this is a good place to learn the basics: http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/011/fir...
As for graphics, if you're willing to buy a program, try Paint Shop Pro -- it's not as expensive as Photoshop but it's still a good starting point. Read tutorials on it and fiddle around with it. With time you'll be able to make your own great layouts :)
